A story of hope, love, and unspeakable death in a disappearing Brazilian rainforest. A team of dogged conservationists tries to save a beautiful monkey species, the golden lion tamarin, from certain extinction by reinforcing their numbers with tamarins born in zoos. Will these immigrants learn to find enough to eat, find secure places to sleep, avoid predators, and survive attacks by wild tamarins? Will they find mates and make babies? The technique, known as reintroduction, is new, and the conservationists struggle to find the best method. Can they train the tamarins in zoos to meet the challenges of the wild? Once the monkeys are released in the forest, should the people give them food, shoo away predators, rescue them if they get lost, and treat them if they are injured? Or should they be hands-off, letting the monkeys fend for themselves and become wild as quickly as possible? Beck describes the reintroduction of the first 13 tamarins, capturing their fierce determination to survive, their loves and conflicts, their nurturant families, adorable babies, hidden language, sometimes hilarious attempts to solve the problems of adapting, and the agonizing deaths of those who don't make it. He describes the power and beauty of the rainforest, and the loves, loyalties, conflicts, and sometimes hilarious bumbling by their human caretakers. Challenging their better-known bosses, two women, a zookeeper and a Brazilian field assistant, discover the right way to reintroduce the monkeys. But a well-known Rio citizen almost destroys the program in a callous act of vanity. The story is vivid and authentic; Beck was there and has studied animal thinking and monkey and ape conservation for more than 40 years.

The anecdotal style balances science and human interest to spin an interesting tale set in the Brazilian forest. The author includes us in his world where idealism and pragmatism collide. The golden tamarin's fate is a microcosm of our current ecological dilemma. I'm always happy to be entertained and educated by the same book.

I hope more books like this are written. This book gives one a good since of what it's like to work with endangered animals in a reintroduction program. GLTs are amazing creatures and this books is a fun way to get familiar with the species and their conservation history.
A wonderful tale of a true conservation success story, told partially through the monkeys themselves, that will engage everyone from 12 to 72 (which I am).
A book written for lay people to explain a very complicated undertaking, years in the making. One of only a handful of successful reintroductions to the wild, written in an engaging little book.
A very compelling story about an effort to save monkeys from going extinct in the jungle of Brazil.

This is a scientific tale told in simple words. Both young and old readers will like this.

Reading it was like taking an interesting class about animal re-introduction. I would suggest it for anyone who likes animals or zoos.
While sensationalized, this is a fun and informative read for anyone interested in primatology! The characters and tamarins were loveable and I regret that the story came to an end.
Ben Beck has written a concise, factual, entertaining story of a vital aspect as to how The Golden Lion Tamarin, Leontepithecus Rosalia, a Brasilian coastal rain forest monkey the size of a big squirrel, was saved from extinction. He anthropomorphises the Tamarins more than I am comfortable with, it is important though to the way Ben Beck has chosen to tell the tale The book is suitable for all ages.

Excellent book and has a different perspective. I know the author and he has done a fine job. He gives the tamarins personality and involvement. You can see the reintroduction from the tamarins point of view...neat perspective! I think this is a good book for young teenagers.
